Guy Owen Manning

CAPTAIN

Guy Owen Manning was the middle son of Judge Charles and Emily Manning who lived at Hunter’s Hill. His older brother Charles Edye Manning (TKS 1892-98 ) was in New Guinea with Guy before transferring to France where he was KIA 7 August 1916. The younger brother Hugh Eldred Manning (TKS 1896-1901) was Vice Captain of the School 1900-01 before studying law. He passed away in 1965.

Guy enlisted 14 August 1914 in the 1st Battalion AIF Tropical Unit, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force. He had married Lynda Cowper and they had a daughter Mary. He had previously worked in Papua as a Magistrate and Planter. In November 1914 he was appointed Officer in Charge of Native Affairs Rabaul. He was present when the Germans surrendered in Rabaul and this is mentioned in his letters. In January the following year, promoted to Captain he was appointed to be District Officer, New Ireland and Officer in Charge of the Garrison at Kavieng, PNG. He met his death as a result of a motor bike accident 18 May 1915 at Myom New Mecklenburg, Bismarck Archipelago, German New Guinea. He was buried at Kavieng European Cemetery, Kavieng, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea.
