Stereoscope photo card of the Tower Bridge over the Thames River in London


One of a collection of stereoscope cards used with the stereoscope. Each card comes with the description of the image on the reverse. In this case The Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. This card is from Series 3. Stereographic views, are a pair of slightly different photographs placed side by side, depicting a scene viewed from each eye. The pair of images appears as a single three-dimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope. They were very popular in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century. The viewing pedestal has a wooden base with an aluminium viewing case edged with velvet and a slide . A wooden slide allows the viewer to adjust the distance on the slide. On the base of the viewer is a small plate "The FIne-Art Photographers Publishing Co. 46 Rydevale Road London SW USA Patent Oct.15 1895.
