MG Fielding Medals


Military Cross, 1914-15 Star, 1914-1918 British War Medal, Victory medal belonging to Morris Glanville Fielding a great great grand nephew of Richard Johnson, the first Chaplain of NSW. He received the Broughton and Forrest Scholarhsip and studied Theology at Merton College Oxford.He enlisted as a reserve in 1911 in the King Edward's Horse Battalion until 26 December 1915 when he transferred to the 2nd Battalion Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry 7 March 1916 to 2 May 1917 when he transferred again to the 3rd Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry 1 October 1918- 17 April 1919. He was invalided from service 15 August 1919 owing to Injuries sustained during the war. He was promoted from the ranks as a Trooper then Corporal and finally Captain 31 January 1917. He was awarded a Military Cross at the Battle of Beaumont Hamel 13 October 1916, having received a Mention In Despatches in July 1916 where he assumed command of his Company and organised his left flank defence, worked untiringly and sent in most valuable information. During the war he was injured three times, shell shocked and gassed. On returning to Australia he was deaconed then priested and in 1924 became Rector of Longueville, a position he held for 30 years, illness from his war injuries forcing him to retire in 1954. He died in 1972.
