JM Maughan Medals


Distinguished Service Order, World War 1 Service Medal, British War Medal (1914-1920), The Victory medal with oak Leaves (mid), George V Silver Jubilee Medal (6 May 1935), Colonial Auxiliary Forces Medal, George VI Coronation Medal (1937), belonging to John Malbon Maughan.(TKS 1891-96) The Broughton and Forrest Exhibition provided for him to read Law at Balliol College, Oxford where he graduated with an Honours Degree. He was admitted as a Solicitor in 1906 with Norton Smith and Co , and later became a partner in a firm with Houghton Bradley. John joined up in 1914 and was Administrator and Officer in Charge in the German Solomon Islands as a member of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force before being transferred as a Company Commander in the 17th Batallion where he saw service at Gallipoli, Egypt and at Pozieres in France. The Distinguished Service order was awarded for "conspicious gallantry during a bomb fight. John stood before the parapet firing a "verey" pistol to light up the ground for the bombers. He was exposed to enemy snipers' fire from No Man's Land and the continual firing of his pistol showed his position. Finally he was wounded (14 Dec 1916) Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel he commanded the 20th Battalion in the advance on Bapaume and the 5th Training Battalion at Salisbury Plain. He was invalided back to Australia in February 1918. After the war he commanded the 19th Battalion AMF and for fourteen years was the Chief Commissioner for the Boy's Scouts Association at the behest of the NSW Governor Sir Phillip Game. George V Silver Jubilee 1935 medal was awarded as a personal souvenir from the monarch to celebrate his silver jubilee. There were 6,500 out of the 85,234 manufactured given to Australians for community engagement. Coronation George VI Medal 1937 There were 90,279 manufactured, 6,887 awarded to Australians to commemorate the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Colonial Auxiliary Forces Medal was established in 18 May 1899 by Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria for long and meritorious service as a part-time commissioned officer in any of the military forces of the British, Colonies, Dependencies or Protectorates.
