JB Burns Family Cemetery


Matching granite headstone fastened to a sandstone backing set upon a a sandstone plinth for both Sir James Burns and his son James. Sir James' has sansdstone surround is topped by marble. Sacred to the memory of/James Burns/ Eldest son of/Sir James Burns/ Born Sydney 30th December 1881/Died Bowral 5th August 1969. James enlisted 24 April 1916 5th Division Trench Mortar Battery having had experience with the Parramatta Lancers. He was sent to France in 1917 and commended for his coolness under fire . He received a gunshot wound to the chest in August 1918 and following repatriation to England returned to Australia to continue working at Burns Philip. On the death of his father in 1923 was has appointed Chairman of Directors at Burns Philp a position he held until he retired in 1967.
