Hall typewriter, Salem

Small portable typewriter of the index class. Mounted in a wooden case with hinged lid, lock and brass handle, the typewriter has a metal frame with circular metal rails that allow a rectangular carriage to move along. The carriage holds a square index plate with 9 x 9 array of holes marked with letters, numbers and other characters. The is a sliding metal handle which pivots and carries a selector pin which can be placed above the selected letter or symbol. This handle is connected to a rubber plate mounted beneath the carriage which is embossed with the letters and symbols.
