Gavel and stand; The Inscription reads below the Waddy Family Crest OB DUCEM OB PATRIUM Richard Selkirk Waddy Sergeant Pilot RAAF 2.6.1910- 21.4 1941. The inscription on the gavel reads As a tree falls so shall it lie As a man live so shall he die. The Latin translates for our leader for our country. The quote references Ecclesiastes 11:3-5. Richard Selkirk Waddy served in the 55 Operational Training Unit .He was killed while flying a Spitfire in April 1941. Inscription on the base Sgt Pilot Richard Selkirk Waddy 21 April 1941 Gift of his Godson Wing CDR the Hon. Lloyd Waddy AM RFD QC(CAF) The base has a gold plated sphinx on each corner and there is a central box of black bakelite with a lid which lifts off and contains the gavel. On the lid of the box is the inscription on a silver plate. There is a tooled fan like border around the lower edge of the base and the box.
