Cardew Dead Man's Penny


One of three three Memorial Plaques more commonly known as "Dead Man's Pennies" presented to the Next of Kin of a defence person killed in WWI 1914-1919. The Memorial Plaque is 12cm in diameter and cast in bronze.It shows Britannia, two dolphins and a lion on the front all representing Britain while below the lion is a defeated eagle representing Germany.The plaque bears the inscription: "He died for freedom and honour". The full name of the dead soldier is engraved on the right hand side of the plaque. No rank, unit or decorations are shown. The plaques were usually accompanied by a scroll and a form letter.
